This weekend, Feb. 13-Feb 16, is President’s Day weekend and that means it’s time for the Great Backyard Bird Count. This is an easy way to participate in Citizen Science in your own yard or neighborhood. The GBBC was started in 1998 and is organized by The Cornell School of Ornithology and The Audubon Society. All you have to do is spend 15 minutes on one of these 4 days counting the types and number of birds you see. Then you send your information to the GBBC web page. Not so hard, is it? But, you say, you don’t really know what the birds are that you are seeing. Well, you can borrow a field guide from the public library or get one of your own from your local book store and at least try to identify what you are seeing. You can get some help from various websites like All About Birds and others. But, you’ll find that you can begin to identify the most common ones without too much work.
